The official site has revealed the back cover of Christie Golden’s upcoming Fate of the Jedi novel Ascension. Ascension will be the 8th novel in the nine book Fate of the Jediseries and is slated for release on August 9th. According to Star Wars Books Facebook page the back cover “features the most notorious bounty hunter in the galaxy!” so it’s safe to say it’s Boba Fett.

They have also revealed the synopsis:

How long can the Jedi remain in power?
How far will the Sith go to rule supreme?
What chance do both stand against Abeloth?

As Luke and Ben Skywalker pursue the formidable dark-side being Abeloth, the Lost Tribe of the Sith is about to be sundered by an even greater power — which will thrust one Dark Lord into mortal conflict with his own flesh-and-blood.

On Coruscant, a political vacuum has left tensions at the boiling point, with factions racing to claim control of the Galactic Alliance. Suddenly surrounded by hidden agendas, treacherous conspiracies, and covert Sith agents, the Jedi Order must struggle to keep the GA government from collapsing into anarchy.

The Jedi are committed to maintaining peace and ensuring just rule, but even they are not prepared to take on the combined threats of Sith power, a deposed dictator bent on galaxywide vengeance, and an entity of pure cunning and profound evil hungry to become a god.

Grand Moff Tarkin Lives!

May 27, 2011 at 2:00 am | Posted in Art, Miscellaneous | Leave a comment

As a big Peter Cushing fan, I have to wonder whether the actor would enjoy the creepy factor that artist Jordu Schell was able to capture with one of the most life like busts I’ve ever seen. When someone says “It’s like having Peter Cushing in the room with you” you might think that it’s just hyperbole, but in this case it’s the honest truth. Behold, Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin…

What’s that? You think that’s photoshop, a faked image, it can’t possibly be real? Well think again, that is a masterpiece created by artist Jordu Schell using silicone, custom glass eyes, real cloth, and hand punched hair. It’s an unbelievably realistic work of art that truly captures Peter Cushing in his role as the infamous Grand Moff Tarkin. Please follow the link here in order to see more pictures of the wonderful piece and if you’d like to see some of the other work Mr. Schell has crafted, you can visit his official website here. I recommend perusing his store to check out the ultra life like masks. Here’s a sample of what you can expect. Enjoy!

Space Archaeologists

May 27, 2011 at 1:00 am | Posted in Science News | Leave a comment

Using infra-red red satellite imagery, a team at the University of Alabama discovered 17 pyramids, 1000 tombs, and 3,000 ancient settlements all buried underneath the silt from the Nile River. After some initial investigations at just one of the sites, Egyptian officials are calling it “one of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt.” Archaeologists are eager to start looking deeper under the surface in search of more ruins and information. This discovery could lead to a new breakthrough in modern archaeology.

You can read the full article here for all of the details. People are already comparing this to Indiana Jones, which makes me wonder if Indy 5 might just get a new space spin.

Okay, maybe that's taking things a little too far...

Happy Birthday, Christopher Lee

May 27, 2011 at 12:01 am | Posted in Birthday, Movies, Star Wars News | Leave a comment

The master of Hammer Horror celebrates his 89th birthday today, and we here at Roqoo Depot wish him a very happy birthday. Being a fan of old horror movies, I have to say Christopher Lee is one of the greats and his work with fellow actor Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin) are timeless cinematic classics. Most of you will recognize him as Count Dooku in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. You’ll probably also recognize him as Saruman the White in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. What you might not have known is that Christopher Lee has also played the monster in The Curse of Frankenstein, Count Dracula in Horror of Dracula (and nine other vampire films), and the mummy in, well, what else The Mummy.

Born in London England, Christopher would later attend Wellington College and joined the RAF to fight in World War II. During the war he served as a cipher officer with the No. 260 Squadron RAF in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He also served as an intelligence officer for the Long Range Desert Group (a recon and raiding force) and at some point ended up in the Special Operations Executive (SOE). The SOE was a British special forces unit tasked with espionage and sabotage behind enemy lines. In other words, he was a spy. The SOE has some rather colorful names including: The Baker Street Irregulars, Churchill’s Secret Army, and my favorite The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. It’s worth noting that Christopher Lee is a cousin to Ian Fleming, the author and creator of James Bond, and according to rumor, the activities of both individuals during the war is still top secret.

After leaving the RAF in 1946 as a Flight Lieutenant, he became an actor and eventually played a small part in his first film Corridor of Mirrors in 1948. Later that year he played another role in the film Hamlet along side fellow actor Peter Cushing whom he would later become friends with and together dominate the British horror films of the 60’s and 70’s.  As of date, Christopher Lee has had 272 film roles in total. In the upcoming Hobbit, he will be retaking his role as Saruman.

Aside from his success in films, Mr. Lee has also had a very successful marriage. He has been married since 1961 to Danish model Birgit “Gitte” Kroencke Lee, and they have one daughter. If you would like learn more about Christopher Lee you can check out his official website here, and for some real fun you might want to read this entertaining article about him on that includes a video of him explaining to Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson just what sound a man makes when you stab them in the back (I told you he was a spy!).
