Yuri’s Night
April 12, 2011 at 12:01 am | Posted in 501st, Events, Science News | Leave a commentTags: yuri's night
On April 12, 1961 cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, on board Vostok 1, became the first human to be launched into space. In honor of this historic achievement, Yuri’s Night is celebrated across the world every April 12th (the first Yuri’s Night being on the 40th anniversary in 2001). This year is even more special in that it marks the 50th anniversary of man’s first trip into space.
The celebration itself represents more than just the achievement of Yuri Gagarin, but the achievement of the entire human race. As such Yuri’s Night exemplifies the achievements of space exploration as a whole and is embraced by countries across the globe.
If you’re interested in seeing if there are any Yuri’s Night parties in your area, you can check out the official website. There is also a lot of background and historic information available on the site. For those in the San Diego area, the Southern California Garrison will be attending the Yuri’s Night party at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. You can find more details here.
